Things i've noticed
Since i've gotten here, i've noticed a couple of things:
There's a lot of 'Latinos' here. The demographic for the area says that the population is primarly white with a large east asian population. I'm quite used to this scenario. However this doesn't on first glance appear to be the case, what I do see is a lot of mexican restaurants, and a lot of mexicans. Most things are in English and Spanish the same way they're in english and french (or english and mandarin) in Toronto.
Everything is in imperial. Gah, I have to learn the farenheit system. Move into the new millenium people.
I'm now moved into my place in mountain view. There's some weird ass trees around my house. I'll post some pictures tonight.
Home of the Brave
So much for 3 hours in immigration. I got to the airport this morning at about 10:45, and after saying rushed goodbyes, headed through security. By 11:30, I was sitting by the gate, playing Battle for Middle Earth on my laptop, which was convieniently plugged into the wall, using the airport juice.
No fingerprints, no digital photos, nothing.
Eventually I get loaded into the smallest airplane you can still call a jet. There were 3 seats abreast in this thing, I've never had the opportunity to have both a window and aisle seat at the same time. Despite this, the flight was fine, the onboard snack was better than anything i've ever had on any other flight (flew with continental), Crackers and Cracked Peppercorn cheese, trail mix, and a twix bar. So much for a small-ass bag of peanuts.
Arrived at Houston at the appropriate time. That's not a small airport. And the inside of it is basically a mall. I had to take a train (pretty cool one too, monorail, no driver) from the terminal I arrived at to the one I had to take my connecting flight to. That flight went less well, got delayed by an hour, on board dinner was a ranch salad and a BBQ chicken sandwich. Read the entirety of Shadow of the Giant by Orson Scott Card today. I think I identify with Bean quite strongly, I can see why Peter recommended Ender's Shadow to me.
I decided to crash land at a Hilton Garden Inn for the evening, 89$ for a Queen bed, Internet access, and the ability to lounge around for the rest of the evening, get up, have a nice breakfast downstairs, swim, shower, and start the next four months of my life.
